The Energy Transition - Addressing Climate Change in a Post-Pandemic World

The pandemic crisis holds profound lessons that can help us address climate change—if we make greater economic and environmental resilience core to our planning for the recovery ahead. To leverage this opportunity, leaders would benefit from considering three questions: What lessons can be learned from the current pandemic for climate change? What implications—positive or negative—could our pandemic responses hold for climate action? What steps could companies, governments, and individuals take to align our immediate pandemic response with the imperatives of sustainability? This compelling presentation will provide some initial answers to these questions, in the hope that they will inspire ideas and actions that help connect our immediate crisis response with priorities for recovery.

Opening Session

2:15 – 2:45PM GMT

Sector Coupling - Powering the Decarbonisation of Economies

To produce a carbon-neutral, affordable, and secure energy mix, all energy vectors will have to evolve. Sector coupling, together with new technology, is already giving these opportunities to prosumers and consumers for efficient decarbonization. With sector coupling, we are able to integrate energy end-use and supply sectors, with an incredible potential to reduce the costs of decarbonization and improve energy efficiency. Through sector coupling, renewable energy can be fully utilized with emissions reduced and the energy system optimized. This panel will focus on four pillars, 1. Power Sector 2. Buildings (heating & cooling) 3. Mobility and 4. Industry. It will aim to highlight thought leadership, partnerships, and opportunities present when discussing the role of sector coupling in the decarbonisation of economies.

Session 2

2:45 – 3:15PM GMT

Towards Climate Neutral Cities - Unlocking the Power of Energy Efficiency to Accelerate the Transition to Net-Zero

The growing urban communities are directly related to global energy consumption with an increasing carbon footprint. Current urban planning needs to look at unlocking the power of efficiency and energy savings in making climate neutral cities by reducing energy demands and carbon intensity. By delivering efficiency, cities are able to ensure a strategic approach to the low-carbon economy. This panel will discuss the pressing importance of building an efficient city, highlighting circular models of climate-neutral and resilient cities, based on the redesign of existing urban areas, and the planning of new urban expansions conducted with the effort to save energy and promote widespread integration of smart grids and renewable energy.

Session 1

2:15 – 2:45PM GMT

Accelerating the Clean Energy Transition - Innovation Pathways and Transforming the Energy Value Chain of Tomorrow

With the power sector counting for a quarter of global emissions, the clean energy transition is central to tackling climate change. To meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, the IEA states that the global transition must move four times faster than its current pace. This presents a significant challenge, to create a concerted effort, to drive down the cost of new technologies and transform the way energy is produced, stored and delivered. This session will discuss the measures necessary to reduce global emissions and make energy systems more resilient, measures such as transforming the energy matrix through innovative and intelligent low carbon technologies and partnerships.

  • Emma Pinchbeck / CEO / Energy UK (moderator - invited)

  • Ville Rimali / Director of Growth and Development in Africa and Europe / Wärtsilä (confirmed)

  • Jorgo Chatzimarkakis / Secretary General / Hydrogen Europe (confirmed)

  • Lord Adair Turner / Chair / Energy Transitions Commission (confirmed)

Session 2

2:45 – 3:15PM GMT

Hedging Risk - The Opportunities of Investing in a Climate Resilient Economy

Through integrating climate risks into decision-making and by strengthening sustainable risk
management, investors, insurers, and solution providers can drive the shift towards a more climate resilient economy across societies and industries. What is the economic case for integrating climate into investment portfolios? This panel will look at how to avoid stranded assets and increase green investments, such as natural capital, whilst discussing climate-related physical and transition risks, recognising best practices spearheading climate resilient economies.

  • Remco Fischer / Climate Change / UNEP Finance Initiative (moderator - invited)

  • John Mulligan / Director and Climate Change Lead / World Gold Council (confirmed)

  • Burcu Guner / EMEA Stress Testing Practice Leader / Moody's Analytics (confirmed)

  • Barbara Buchner / Global Managing Director and Executive Director / CPI (confirmed)

Closing Session

3:15 – 3:55PM GMT

Accelerating the Clean Energy Transition - Innovation Pathways and Transforming the Energy Value Chain of Tomorrow

Throughout the years of climate summits, conferences and COPs, it has become clear that the world has the capacity, imagination and resources to radically, democratically and fairly decarbonise the global economy and repair the natural world. 2020 has become a historic opportunity for the world to unite to build momentum towards a world resilient to the effects of future pandemics and the impacts of climate change. The next decade may result in a crucial tipping point that warrants our collective and urgent action, from policy to practice. This closing session will address what emerging and proven actions are taking place to help Europe reach pivotal targets in addressing the climate crisis. What lessons exist in our ability to continually adapt to the effects of a pandemic that may also apply to climate change? How do we ensure that our path to recovery includes a strong climate agenda that also strengthens our resilience, incorporates net-zero goals, catalyses climate investments, and guarantees a safe and fair recovery?
